It Is Time For Waxing!

September Specials (1)

The days are short and the fall chill is settling in, and ‘tis the season for pants and cozy sweaters. It is a convenient time to throw away razors, grow out the hair on our legs, bikini lines, underarms and backs, and start waxing. By spring, all the hairs in the waxed areas will be coming in together and permanent reduction will have started to occur, resulting in less hair growth over the spring and summer.

In a perfect world, I would be telling you to lose your razor permanently, but life doesn’t work that way. There are always going to be events, date nights or vacations when a razor may be your best friend! While on a waxing hair removal plan, limit your razor use and try to be as consistent as possible with your waxing appointments every 3-4 weeks to achieve best results.

I always recommend that my clients exfoliate and hydrate the area being waxed the day before their appointment. This will remove excess dead skin, help reduce ingrown hairs and make all the hairs stand proud for the waxing appointment.  It is important to remember to avoid hot tubs, pools and sweaty exercise immediately after waxing. Exercise is okay to do before the appointment, but not after because sweat, dirt and oil can cause all those empty hair follicles to get infected and pustules to form.

Below are the most common questions we receive on a daily basis about waxing.

Here is to a warm and fuzzy winter!

Does waxing hurt?

Yes and no. It depends on the area being treated and your personal pain threshold. It might be a bit more intense when you first begin to wax, as there is more hair and the roots have had time to get big and comfortable in the skin if you have been shaving previously.

How often do I need to come in to get waxed?

Consistency is the key to achieving the best hair reduction results, so we recommend waxing every 3-4 weeks. This will allow all the undergrowth to grow together so that we can remove everything at the same time, which causes the follicles to stop producing hairs and results in noticeable hair reduction in the waxed area.

How much hair do I need to be able to be waxed?

Approximately ½ cm to 1 ½ cm. If you have shaved, we recommend at least 2-3 weeks’ growth before your waxing appointment.

Are my waxing results permanent?

The hair growth in waxed areas will reduce over time and will eventually cease.

When can I expect to see hair growth reduction?

This depends on the person. Someone who has light hair growth with fine hairs will naturally see reduction faster than someone with heavy, thick hair growth. Regardless of where you fit on the scale of light to heavy hair growth, it can take a few visits to get all the undergrowth to all come in together, and then the real reduction begins.

Can I still be waxed if I have been on Accutane in the last 12 months?

Unfortunately, no. Accutane makes you more sensitive and the skin is more likely to rip when the hair is being waxed.

Does it matter what colour my hair is for waxing?

No, waxing removes all colours of hair, unlike laser hair removal which CANNOT treat red, blonde or grey hairs.

What type of wax does Derma Spa use?

We use two kinds: Novatherm Soft Wax and Rose Hard Wax.

The Novatherm Soft Wax is a high-quality wax that is gentle on the skin and is used for large areas and areas with fine hairs. It is multi-purpose and is so versatile that it can be used in all areas.

The Rose Hard Wax is also a gentle wax, but this one is designed for thicker hair on delicate skin in sensitive areas. It is also ideal for someone whose hair may be a little short for soft wax.

What areas can be treated with wax?

Face, arms, underarms, legs, bikini lines. Men can also be treated on their backs, shoulders and chests.

Is waxing the only form of hair removal at Derma Spa?

No, we offer three types of hair removal: waxing, electrolysis and laser hair removal.

What is the difference between waxing, electrolysis and laser hair removal?

Waxing is a method of hair removal where warm wax is applied to body hair and removed by itself or with a strip. The treated hair must be approximately 1cm long. All hair colours can be treated.

Electrolysis uses an electric current to damage the hair follicle to stop the hair production. This method also requires a growing hair to be treated. All hair colours can be treated.

Laser Hair Removal uses a laser that targets the pigment in the hair follicle. This method requires the patient to shave prior to the appointment. The laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, which means that red, blonde or grey hairs cannot be treated due to their lack of pigment.

If you are unsure which method would suit you best, come in for a complimentary consultation with one of our professionals.
