Past Question

Dear Dr. Hollis,
Can Botox help relieve migraines and tension headaches? If so, are the injection locations different than for cosmetic purposes, i.e. neck and temple, as well as frown/ brow. For a "medical" procedure should the injection be done by a Doctor? I know you are retiring and I would be grateful if you could recommend a Doctor.
- Trish

Dear Trish,
Botox, what a wonderful drug! Yes, it has some efficacy in the treatment of migraine headaches. This was discovered accidentally when patients who had Botox for cosmetic reasons noticed their headaches were less frequent. However, it doesn't work for everyone.

The injections are more or less circumferential around the head but the main injection sites are intramuscular. This means the areas to inject are the around the frontalis (forehead) muscle and the occipital (back of the head) muscle and perhaps the corrugator (just above the eyebrow) muscles. The dose can vary from 40 to 80 Botox units and the benefit often lasts 5-8 months.

Botox Cosmetic does not have to be injected by a doctor, but I recommend that it be done with someone who is highly trained and has extensive experience. Derma Spa's injectable technicians have over 20 years of combined experience, and are up to date on the latest injecting techniques.

P.S. Although I am limiting the procedures I offer, I will be continuing to provide facial surgery and breast augmentations, and will also be working in Derma Spa one day per week.
